James SHELANGOSKI, Brighton, Dies In Highway 1 Auto-Truck Collision

BRIGHTON, Ia. -- James C. SHELANGOSKI, 18, Brighton, was killed instantly this morning when the car he was driving collided with a truck on Highway No. 1 about five miles west of here.

The crash occurred on the Honey creek bridge a short distance east of the entrance to Lake Darling state park.

SHELANGOSKI, traveling west, struck an eastbound truck driven by Dennis Dillon, 18, Hedrick. Dillon, who is employed by the Roland McCreery Elevator Co., Pekin, was uninjured.

Charge Filed
Washington county Coroner Ray Fields said a charge of improper passing had been filed against Dillon. According to Fields, Dillon was in the process of passing an eastbound tractor when the crash took place. The tractor was driven by Larry Kerr, an employee of the Richards Construction Co., Washington. The truck was already past the tractor and Kerr was not involved in the accident.

The front end of the truck struck the left side of the SHELANGOSKI car with terrific force. The car went off the right side of the highway after clearing the bridge, crossed a shallow grader ditch and traveled approximately 300 feet in a field of high weeds.

Fields said SHELANGOSKI's death was caused by multiple head and chest injuries. The car, a 1950 Ford, was a total loss. The left side was pushed in against the driver and the top was crushed.

Washington County Sheriff Charles Snyder and members of the Iowa Highway Patrol also took part in the investigation.
