"ANOTHER OLD SETTLER GONE.....Rolandus Mitchell Moyer was born in Rockingham County, Virginia, June 8, 1818, and lived there until June 1837, when he moved to Warren County, Ohio. A year later he removed to Preble County of that state, locating at Eaton, where he remained until 1843 when he again moved west and arrived at Burlington, Iowa Territory, on Aug. 5th. Two years later he came to Jefferson County, arriving here and entering government land in Penn Township, which he continued to own till the time of his death, and which until a year ago last month, when he removed to this city, was his consistent home. May 23, 1848, he was married to Miss Elizabeth Eikenbery near Burlington, who returned with him to this county, and together on his broad acres they lived and worked for an ample competency in their declining years. Seven children, four still living: C. M. Moyer of York, Nebr.; F. M. Moyer of Black Hawk Township, Mrs. W. S. Shirk and Mrs. Frank Light of this city.....The remains were laid by the side of his wife in Evergreen Cemetery, a place he visited the last on earth, only a few hours before he died."
The Fairfield Ledger, December 23, 1891, p. 3, col. 4.
