Francis J. BENDA, 85, of Ottumwa, former Jefferson County resident, died at 6 p.m. Monday at Ridgewood Care Center in Ottumwa (note: in Wapello Co., IA).
The Mass of the Resurrection will be concelebrated by the Rev. Robert Busher and the Rev. Eugene Benda at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Joseph's Church, E. Pleasant Plain. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Family visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church. A Christian Wake service will be held at 7:30 tonight at Johnson Funeral Chapel in Ottumwa.
BENDA was born March 25, 1897 in Jefferson County, the son of Joseph and Emma KURTZ BENDA. A retired Jefferson County farmer, he had lived in Ottumwa since 1976 and was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Ottumwa. On July 8, 1924 he married Marian BUCHER in E. Pleasant Plain. She died in 1957. On June 25, 1959, he married Margaret PICKEN in Ottumwa. She survives.
Also surviving are a daughter, Barbara DeTAEYE of Davenport; two stepdaughters, Elizabeth PICKEN of Detroit, Mich., Carol HAMLIN of Canoga Park, Calif.; six grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Albert of Fairfield, Max of Brighton, Joseph of Baton Rouge, La.; two sisters, Sister Constance BENDA of Davenport and Bertha MINICK of Washington.
