FairfieldMary "Mike" Catherine HUGHES, 88, of Fairfield, IA passed away Monday, July 16, 2018 at the Sunnybrook Living Care Center in Fairfield, IA. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 20, 2018 at the First Presbyterian Church in Fairfield, IA with Pastor Joe Phipps officiating.
Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, July 20, 2018 at the First Presbyterian Church, and last until the time of service. Burial will take place in the Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield immediately following the service. Memorial contributions in Mary's honor may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church. Mary Catherine HUGHES was born October 26, 1929 in St. Louis, MO to Thomas and Mildred O'TOOLE. She moved to Fairfield, IA and attended Parsons College. On September 4, 1949 she was united in marriage to Milford "Knute" HUGHES. Together they became the loving parents to a son, Jim. During her time at Parsons she was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, the Elzevir Sorority, and was named the 1951 Homecoming Queen. Mary graduated from Parsons with the class of 1952 and began teaching kindergarten in the Fairfield School District. With her love of education, she continued as a teacher and as an associate and tutor at Parsons College.
The family moved to Simsbury, CT for Knute's work where they spent several years before returning to Fairfield. Mary was very interested in athletics, especially golf. She was active with golf administration work at the Fairfield Country Club as well as winning many golf championships in both Iowa and Connecticut. Mary was an active member, and former Elder of the Fairfield First Presbyterian Church and belonged to the PEO Chapter MB in Fairfield. Her four-legged companions were very important to (sic) having adopted many over the years.
Mary had a deep love for Fairfield and a profound dedication to her family and friends.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Milford "Knute" HUGHES (1995) and one brother, Thomas CORLETT.
Left to honor her memory is her son, Jim (Diane) HUGHES of Newington, CT and their children, Kevin and Thomas HUGHES, as well as many extended family and friends.
