MARY HAMBLIN OVROM
Keosauqua

Mary HAMBLIN OVROM, 91, died at the Keosauqua Health Care Center in Keosauqua (note: in Van Buren Co., IA) June 20, 2018, from congestive heart failure. Mary was born March 9, 1927, in Bedford, Iowa to Allen W. and Grace SAILOR HAMBLIN. She married Arthur Paul OVROM December 12, 1951 in Naples, Italy, where Art was serving in the U.S. Navy.

Mary graduated from Coe College in 1949, where she was co-editor of the college newspaper and president of Tri Delta sorority. She earned a Master's degree in journalism from the University of Iowa in 1950. She worked as a newspaper reporter and photographer for a number of newspapers in Southeast Iowa, developing her own photos and hammering out multiple copies of stories on a manual typewriter.

She also wrote a weekly newspaper column, "Around the Bend," for many years. Mary was president of the Iowa Press Women and won many awards for her writing, including one national award for her column.

Mary was a member of the Keosauqua Bridge Club and Chapter I P.E.O., moderator of the Keosauqua Congregational Church, and served on the Van Buren Hospital Board of Directors for 38 years. She did publicity for a number of community organizations, including the Van Buren Players and the Bentonsport Improvement Association. She loved playing golf, float fishing on the Des Moines River, crossword puzzles and family gatherings.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Art, sister, Dora Jane "Dodie" HAMBLIN, brother Henry "Hank" HAMBLIN, granddaughter, Mary FERRETTI, brothers-in-law Dick PERKINS and John MANNING, and sister-in-law Evelyn "Trink" MANNING.

She is survived by her children Liza OVROM and husband Mark SCHULING of Des Moines, Fred OVROM and wife Maureen CONNOLLY of Iowa City, Jennie OVROM FERRETTI and husband David of Charleston, West Virginia, Dorothy "Dodie" OVROM JABOUR and husband John of Clive, and A. Paul OVROM, Jr. and wife Stephenie of Des Moines; grandchildren Charles and Matthew SCHULING, Katie, Ted, Erik, and Lukas OVROM, Nancy FERRETTI STRANIX (J.T), Gracie FERRETTI, Paul, David (Shannon CURTISS), and Rebecca JABOUR, and Sam and Olivia OVROM; great-grandchildren Wes and Maggie JABOUR; sisters-in-law Betty PERKINS and Barbara HAMBLIN, many nieces and nephews, and her special "helper," Carolyn DeHart.

Visitation will be Saturday June 23 at 9:30 a.m. at the Keosauqua Congregational Church, with a memorial service at the church at 11:00 a.m. Pedrick Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Keosauqua Congregational Church, Van Buren County Hospital, or charity of your choice.
