JAMES VICE
Birmingham

James Lee VICE, 77, of Birmingham, IA and formerly of Fairfield, passed away Monday, June 4, 2018 at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, IA (note: in Polk Co., IA). A graveside service, with military honors, will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 8, 2018 at the Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield, IA.

Memorial contributions in Jim's honor may be directed to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association and may be mailed c/o Cranston Family Funeral Home, P.O. Box 189, Fairfield, IA 52556. Friends may sign the online guestbook at www.cranstonfamilyfuneralhome.com.

James Lee VICE was born August 16, 1940 in Fairfield, IA to James and Catherine PRUDEN VICE. He was raised in Fairfield where he attended school, graduating from Fairfield High School with the class of 1958. Jim spent three years at Parson's college (sic) in Fairfield before enlisting in the United States Navy, where he spent twenty years proudly serving his country in the submarine service.

In December of 1961, Jim was united in marriage to Lois MARTIN and together they had three children; Katherine, Michael and Brian. Life took Jim and Lois in separate directions and in 1975 Jim married Carol SPICER. Together they became parents to Jamie. Jim and Carol later divorced, and Jim met Jacqueline BARTOS MORRIS. The two were married in Fairfield, IA on May 19, 1988. With this marriage, Jim stepped in as a father for Jacqueline's children, Sheryl and Jim MORRIS. The two remained by each other's side until Jacqueline's death in 2011. The last seven years of his life were spent with his loving companion, Dorothy Stevens.

In his younger years Jim enjoyed fishing, and later in life began collecting coins, genealogy and woodworking crafts. You would find him watching football, political news, or learning about history through reading historical nonfiction novels. Jim was always learning, whether it was another joke to tell his family or adding to the vocabulary of the three languages he was able to speak. He was a selfless man, who always put other's (sic) before himself.

Jim was proud of his country and the many years he spent in the Navy. He loved his family and took every opportunity to make them laugh and let them know how much he cared. He will be deeply missed.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Earl William VICE, and his wife, Jacqueline Ann BARTOS VICE.

Left to share his story are his children, Katherine Ann YINGLING of Houston Texas, Michael (Jennifer) VICE of Merritt Island, FL, Brian VICE of Houston, TX, Jamie VICE of New York, Sheryl (Jeff) FORD of Sioux City, IA, and Jim (Sandy) MORRIS of South Amana, IA; sixteen grandchildren, Charlie, James, Samantha, Lauren, Robert, David, Chelsea, Makenna, Riley, Zachary, Brandi, James, Christopher, Alec, Savannah, and Ashlynn; three great grandchildren, Indiana, Jaxson, and Alessandra, as well as many extended family and friends and a very loved puppy, Joey.
