DIED.

GRIMES--At her home in Fairfield, Iowa, May 12, 1876, MRS. ANNA E. GRIMES, aged 76 years, 6 months and 2 days.

Mother GRIMES was born in Davidson Co., North Carolina, Nov. 10, 1799. She was baptized in her infancy by Rev. Rusher, of the Lutheran Church, and was received into full membership by confirmation at an early age. In the year 1819 she married Mathias GRIMES, who shared with her the enjoyments and troubles of life until the time of his death, June 4, 1861. She emigrated with her husband and family from North Carolina to Indiana in 1827, and in the year 1835 she removed to Iowa. In the winter of 1855 she assisted in the organization of the Lutheran Church of Fairfield, and became one of its charter members. If I mistake not, she was the last one of the little band that first planted the standard of the Lutheran Church in your city, and she did what she could to promote the interests of the Redeemer's kingdom in connection with that congregation. For many years she has been a great sufferer. -- When I first knew her, twenty years ago, a cancer was making its appearance on her forehead, just above the eye. This gradually grew worse until the year 1869, when she had it operated upon by Dr. Martin, of Mount Pleasant. She was afterwards greatly relieved by operations performed by Dr. Woods, of Fairfield. But no medical skill could eradicate the disease, and she knew, for years, that the final result was only a question of time. She often spoke to me in regard to her approaching end, and seemed to have no dread of dying.

Mother GRIMES possessed many excellent qualities of head and heart. She loved her family and was true to her friends. If she made mistakes they were certainly not intentional. She was always grateful for any kindness received, and was ever ready to forgive an injury. During the last fifteen years of her life, she lived with the family of her youngest son, of whose care and kindness she always spoke with deepest gratitude. She leaves a large family and many friends to mourn her loss. Her work is done, and the Master has said: Enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.
