Page 3 col. 6DEATH OF W. B. ROWLAND. Another of our old citizens has passed to “the other side.” WILLIAM B. ROWLAND died in this city Thursday last, after a lingering illness, of stomach trouble. Old friends and acquaintances followed his remains to their last resting place in the City cemetery at 4 o’clock p. m. on the 13th inst. REV. J. F. MAGILL conducted the exercises in the house and at the grave. MR. ROWLAND was born in Christian County, Kentucky, March 16th 1817. When about thirteen years of age he removed to Illinois with his parents, who finally settled in Hancock County. November 11th, 1841, he was married to MISS. REBECCA MATTHEWS. From Illinois he and his bride moved to Lee County, Iowa, afterwards locating in Hillsboro. In 1850 the gold fever started them Californiaward, but they stopped at Council Bluffs. After remaining in the western part of the state some time, they came to Fairfield in September, 1852, and have made this their permanent home. Five children were born to them: FRANKLIN C. in 1842; NETTIE in 1843; KATE F. in 1847; MARY H. in 1852; ORPHA R. in 1856. Three of the children were married—NETTIE, KATE and MARY. NETTIE is now the only living child. There are six grandchildren. MRS. ROWLAND is living in our city….All of our older citizens will have many pleasant recollections of WILLIAM B. ROWLAND.
