John W. Smith
January 31, 2005John W. Smith, 70, of 2149 236th Blvd., died at 3:10 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
No funeral will be held.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the John W. Smith scholarship fund for a University of Iowa student, in care of Diane Smith, 2149 236th Blvd., Fairfield 52556.
Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Smith was born July 17, 1934, in Fairfield, the son of Rolland and Helen Greenfield Smith. He married Diane Graham at the Little Brown Church in Nashua in 1955.
He graduated from Fairfield High School in 1952 and from Parsons College in 1956. He played basketball and football in high school and college and in 1969 was inducted into the Parsons Hall of Fame for his athletic accomplishments.
Mr. Smith was the controller for Parsons College and audited for the state of Iowa, vice president of Kessler Distributing Company and at the time of his retirement was president of MidStates Airgas in Kansas City, Mo.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Brian R. Smith of Seattle, Wash., and Christopher John Smith and wife Lisa of Gladstone, Mo.; two daughters, Sue Ann Myers and husband Mike of Fairfield and Kathy Lynn Lucas and husband Marty of Des Moines; seven grandchildren and one sister, Donna Barnes of Brighton.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
