CHRISTIAN GRABER

Christian GRABER, son of Christian and Fannie WYSE GRABER was born May 12, 1857 near Lockridge, in Jefferson county, Iowa and passed away at the home of his daughter Mrs. E. A. SMITH near Brighton, April 4, 1942 at the age of 84 years, 10 months, 23 days.

The parents of Mr. GRABER came from France in the early days and the old GRABER home was the big red brick house about a mile west of Lockridge. He was the fourth child in a family of eight of which there is one surviving member, Dan GRABER, who lives near the old home.

At an early age he was confirmed in the Amish church and throughout his life remained a true follower of his early Christian training.

March 15, 1881 he was married to Victoria Jane STEWART daughter of Levi and Callista ARROWSMITH STEWART of Glasgow. The couple spent all of their married life but six years in Iowa retiring on their acreage 1 mile south of Fairfield where they spent the last 23 years. When they moved to Fairfield they transferred their membership to the local Free Methodist church.

Mr. and Mrs. GRABER celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary March 21, 1940 and were both able to enjoy the occasion.

Nov. 19, 1940 after a brief illness the loving wife and mother departed this life at the age of 80 years, 7 months and 29 days. Since then Mr. GRABER had been in declining health. Mr. and Mrs. GRABER were the parents of the following children: Mrs. E. A. SMITH, Brighton; Mrs. H. R. RAUSCHER, Fairfield; Mrs. Linda McLAUGHLIN, Kansas City, Mo.; Mrs. James DETRICK, Burlington; Jesse GRABER, Cleveland, Ohio; Paul GRABER, Davenport. One daughter Mrs. P. J. SHERLOCK preceded them in death in 1918.

Also surviving are 12 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Mr. GRABER and wife were kind, loving neighbors, loving parents and their good home will be greatly missed by their children as well as friends.

Funeral services were held at the Hoskins funeral home in Fairfield Monday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. April 6, 1942, Rev. C. F. Chitty of Cedar Rapids, former pastor and a long time friend of the family officiated. Maurice Long sang two selections "Beautiful Garden of Prayer" and "Beyond the Sunset." Mrs. E. G. Linder accompanying.

Burial was not until Tuesday morning at the Lockridge cemetery awaiting the coming of Pvt. Howard SHERLOCK, a grandson in the army stationed at Wichita Falls, Texas.
