January 24, 2005Alan "Lee" Schooley, 73, of Brighton, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Brighton United Church, with the Rev. Kitch Shatzer officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Brighton.
Open visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Gould Funeral Home in Brighton, with the family present from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Hospice of Washington County or Brighton United Church.
Mr. Schooley was born March 6, 1931, in Brighton, the son of J. Laton and Gladys F. Grant Schooley. He married Shirley Speidel June 26, 1955, in Brighton.
He grew up in Brighton and graduated from Brighton High School in 1949. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean conflict. He retired Jan. 1, 1999, after working for Messer Oil Co. in Washington, Iowa, for 42 years.
Mr. Schooley was a member of Edgar C. Davisson American Legion Post No. 212. He was a former member of the Brighton Volunteer Fire Department and former member of the Brighton School Board. He also coached girls softball and Little League baseball for many years.
He was a member of Brighton United Church.
Survivors include his wife; four sons, Michael Schooley and wife Cindi of Columbia, Mo., Martin Schooley and wife Mary of Vernon Hills, Ill., Murray Schooley and wife Shawn of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and Monte Schooley and wife Missy of Iowa City; seven grandchildren; one brother, Stan Schooley of Brighton; and two sisters, Virginia Hendriks of Bowden, Alberta, Canada, and Helen Filmore of Burlington.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Norman Schooley.
