S. Warner Kirlin, 94, of Eugene, Ore., and formerly of Fairfield, died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2004.

A celebration of life was held Sept. 4 in Eugene. Rest-Haven Memorial in Eugene was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials can be made to Cornell College in Mount Vernon.

Mr. Kirlin was born July 13, 1910 in Saratoga, Wyo., the son of Archie A. and Gertrude Irene Warner Kirlin. He married June Dickinson Caldwell Aug. 1, 1951 in Cedar Rapids.

He graduated from high school in Fontanelle in 1928. He received a bachelor's degree from Cornell College and a master's degree from the University of Iowa in 1938. He did additional graduate work at the University of Iowa and University of Oregon.

Mr. Kirlin served on active duty in the Air Force as an aviation instructor during World War II at the University of Minnesota and Purdue University from 1943 to 1947.

From 1947 to 1962, he was a high school teacher, high school principal in Bettendorf and dean of a junior college in Estherville. He was the principal and superintendent at Fairfield High School from 1953 to 1962. He was director of personnel for the Eugene School District from 1962 to 1969 and held the same position in Davenport until 1976.

He spent his free time directing choirs and bands in Iowa and he was a vocal soloist. He also spent time horseshoe pitching and was world champion in 1988.

Mr. Kirlin and his wife moved to Eugene in 1979, and he built a log cabin in the Cascade Mountains.

He was a member of Rotary, Lions and Kiwanis clubs in various communities and a member of First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, one daughter, Judy Swan and husband Theodore; one grandson; one granddaughter; three great-grandchildren and one brother, Vernon Kirlin of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one stepson, Wendel Caldwell; five sisters; and three brothers.
