Kenneth L. BATES

Stockton, KS

Kenneth L. BATES, 90, passed away on August 31, 2017 in Stockton, Kansas. Ken was born on October 27, 1926 in Fairfield, Iowa, the second son of Victor Dallas BATES and Marie Ethel (RODGERS) BATES. After graduating from Fairfield High School, Ken joined the U.S. Navy where he served from 1944 to 1946. After his discharge from the navy, Ken returned to his hometown and enrolled in Parsons College. He was offered work in the local J. C. Penney store where he had worked part-time while in high school. Ken married Maxine GREENE in September 1948. To this union was born two children: Brad and Deanne. The family moved in 1954 when Ken was promoted to assistant manager for the Penney's store in Emporia, Kansas. His career continued to advance with a promotion to a manager's position in Stockton, Kansas; which became the family's long-time home. Ken later opened his own department store in Stockton called Bates of Stockton. Ken is survived by his wife of 69 years, Maxine of Stockton, Kansas: two children Brad (Kim) BATES, Chevy Chase, Md and Dee WICKS, Council Bluffs, Iowa; his for (sic) grandchildren Tyson WICKS and Kale (Brandy) WICKS of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Kira BATES of Washington, D.C., and Brittany (Brandon) WATTS of San Francisco, California; and two great granddaughters Kansas WICKS and Kendric WICKS of Council Bluffs, Ia; Mildred BATES, sister-in-law, Fairfield, Ia; Randy (Colleen) BATES, nephew, Fairfield, Ia; Ronnie BATES (Pris), Udon Thani, Thailand.
