Merlin E. "Mike" WESELY, 89 of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Monday, August 7, 2017, at Pleasant Manor Care Center in Mt. Pleasant (note: in Henry Co., IA).

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 15, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Mt. Pleasant with Rev. Mike Scudder officiating. Burial will follow in the Forest Home Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant. Friends may call after 11 a.m. on Monday at the Murphy Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant until 3 p.m. The family will receive friends from 4:30 til 7:30 on Monday at the Faith Lutheran Church in Mt. Pleasant. Memorials may be directed to the Faith Lutheran Church or to the Mt. Pleasant Fire Department in his memory.

Mike was born on February 29, 1928, in Keosauqua, the son of Frank J. and Mary COOPER WESELY. He graduated from the Mt. Pleasant High School in the class of 1948. Mike was united in marriage to Florence J. HILL SHIRKEY on September 4, 1954, in Iowa City. Mike worked for the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown for 11 years and later for Wesley Barton Construction of Mt. Pleasant for 24 years. He was a lifelong carpenter, he enjoyed woodworking and refinishing furniture. He was an avid St Louis Cardinals fan and he enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Mike was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Mt. Pleasant where he served as a trustee of the church. He served on the Mt. Pleasant Fire Department from 1961 until 1986.

Mike is survived by his wife Florence of Mt. Pleasant and his children: Charles SHIRKEY and Candy of Mt. Pleasant, Sandra ALLENDER of Mt. Pleasant, Mark (Janet) WESELY of Danville, Nancy WEIGERT of Mt. Pleasant and Amy (Todd) MABEUS of Mt. Pleasant, his grandchildren: Josh & Gabe SHIRKEY, Amanda WALLJASPER-TATE Sara WALLJASPER, Katie KREMER, Stephanie WESELY, Emily WOLFE, Natalie WESELY, Travis & Shaylee WEIGERT, Hannah MABEUS, Mikayla MABEUS, Courtney MABEUS and Trevor MABEUS, 9 great grandchildren, his sisters Dorothy BURTON of Aurora, Jane GILSON of Omaha, Genieve FETTERMAN of Salem and his brother: Charles WESELY of Salem.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers: Paul, Joe, George, Johnny, his sisters: Bertha, Priscilla, Erma Jean, his son-in-law's (sic): Jerry ALLENDER and Jeff WEIGERT.
