DEATHS

Funeral for Mrs. DESPAIN

Funeral services for Mrs. Rachel DeSPAIN, who passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. James MANARY, Wednesday evening, will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Campbell Funeral home in charge of Dr. Gilbert Voorhies.

Mrs. DeSPAIN was born in Cumberland, Ohio May 29, 1845, her maiden name was Rachel COX. Her husband, William DeSPAIN preceded her in death, June 17, 1917 at the age of 92 years. About a year ago Mrs. DeSPAIN fell, breaking one arm and dislocating a shouldder (sic). She had been bedfast since the first of August.

She is the mother of eighteen children of which 10 are still living. She has fifty grandchildren and 48 great grandchildren. Not only for its size is this family known but also for ripe old age which all of the members have attained. Mrs. DeSPAIN was 85 years old and despite her total blindness she was, up until a year ago, able to get around and did much traveling among her children, who are scattered in several states.

Her father was 90 years old when he died and her mother was 84 at her death. A brother died in January 1929 at the age of 90. The Theodore DeSPAIN's ancestry on his paternal side was also know (sic) for its long age, his great grandfather dying when 104 years old.

She is survived by the following children: Peter DeSPAIN, Mrs. Rachel BEHNE and Mrs. Laura MANARY all of this city; Jerry, Joseph and Mrs. Priscilla MAXWELL of Burlington; George of Oquawa, Ill. (sic - Oquawka); Theodore Stanton DeSPAIN of East Moline; Mrs. Annia McINTIRE of Moline and Mrs. Indabelle GRAHAM of Ottumwa all of whom will be here to attend the services. She also leaves a sister Mrs. Mattie SHIPPARD of Rock Island who is 92 years of age and will be unable to attend the funeral.
