James Norton GILTNER

BATAVIA -- James Norton GILTNER, 77, of 1898 Carnation Blvd., died at 11:14 p.m. April 7, 2017 at Mercy Medical Center West Lakes in West Des Moines (note: in Polk Co., IA).

He was born Jul 16, 1939 in rural Batavia to Everett and Alyce BENNETT GILTNER. He married Addie Kay JAMES on December 21, 1974.

A graduate of Batavia High school, he attended Parsons College.

Norton farmed all of his life in Wapello and Jefferson Counties.

He was a member of Batavia United Methodist Church where he served as the Administrative Board Chairman and a Trustee for many years. He was also a township trustee, served on the board of directors for the Farmers Cooperative and the Supply Cooperative Association for many years.

He loved sprint car racing and Indian Hills basketball. He was attentive in caring for his animals and working the gate at the Wapello County Fairs in Eldon for many years.

Surviving is his wife, Addie Kay; two sons, Jay Norton GILTNER of Batavia and Matt James (Kelly) GILTNER of Mt. Zion, IL; four grandchildren, Brett James, Krista Beth, Luca Elizabeth and Calla Grace; a sister, Mildred (Gary) VANNOY of Richland; and a sister-in-law, Cleo GILTNER of Batavia; numerous nieces and nephews that were very close to him.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Harold Dean GILTNER.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Batavia United Methodist Church with Pastor Michael Finn officiating. Burial will be in Batavia Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Memorials may be made to Batavia United Methodist Church or the American Heart Association.
