John W. SICKELS

John William SICKELS, 84, formerly of Douds, died Wednesday, March 29, 2017, at the Bloomfield Care Center in Bloomfield (note: in Davis Co., IA).

The funeral is 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Cranston Family Funeral Home in Eldon. Burial, with military honors, will be at Mt. Moriah Cemetery near Douds (note: in Van Buren Co., IA).

Visitation is 10 a.m. until the time of service Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorials can be directed to Ottumwa Legion Post 3, Ottumwa VFW Post 775, or Des Moines River Primitive Baptist Church. An online guestbook is at www.cranstonfamilyfuneralhome.com .

Mr. SICKELS was born Jan. 3, 1933, in rural Davis County to William B. and Martha HUGHES SICKELS. He married Barbara THOMPSON March 19, 1955.

As a child, he moved with his family to Eldon. He graduated from Eldon High School in 1951.

He worked at John Morrells until it closed, then at American Chain and Cable for a year before going to John Deere Ottumwa Works, where he remained until retirement. After retirement, he worked on vehicles in his repair business and worked on his farm.

Mr. SICKELS was drafted into the U.S. Army in February 1953. He was stationed in Germany, and received an Honorable Discharge.

Mr. and Mrs. SICKELS spent the first 10 years of their marriage in Eldon. They moved in 1966 to their farm near Douds, where they lived for more than 50 years.

Survivors include: wife, Barbara; daughters, Deborah (Leon) SURBAUGH of Krum, Texas, Linda BATES of Waukee, and Kaye (Stuart) GILBERT of Stockport; sons, John Jr. (Rhonda) SICKELS of Muscatine,, (sic) Bill (Lorie) SICKELS of Birmingham, David (Trudi) SICKELS of Stuart, and Murl (Jenny) SICKELS of Gentry, Arkansas; 14 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
