FORMER GREENE COUNTIAN DIES

Mrs. Mary A. MONTGOMERY wife of M.M. SHIRK died at her home in Batavia Saturday evening. She was stricken with apoplexy the 8th inst. while recovering from an attack of pneumonia and never regained consciousness. Mrs. SHIRK was born at Ruff Creek, Penn., October 6, 1845, one of a family of twelve children, only five of whom are living, among them Mrs. S.C. COWAN of this city. She married in that state October 13th, 1864, came to this county forty years ago and spent the remainder of her life in Fairfield and Locust Grove Townships. She was the mother of six children, three of whom are living; Leroy B., in Birmingham, Daniel near Batavia and Charles in Des Mons. In early life Mrs. SHIRK was a member of the Baptist Church but at the time of her death belonged to the Methodist Church of Batavia. Her pastor Rev. L.M. Orcutt, spoke in the highest terms of her beautiful Christian character, and the esteem in which she was held was shown by the large attendance at her funeral. The Ladies Aid Society of which she was a member gave a beautiful floral anchor as a token of its love for her. The church had lost a most ardent and faithful member, the community an ever helping hand, the children a loving mother and he husband a true companion. It can be truly said of her that the world is a better place for her having lived in it.

Mrs. SHIRK was well and favorably known in Greene County. Thomas MONTGOMERY of Bonar Addition is a brother and Mrs. Elizabeth CLAYTON of North Side, Waynesburg is a sister of the deceased. Besides Mrs. S.C. COWAN of Fairfield, Iowa, Mrs. SHIRK has two other sisters, Mrs. James MENDENHALL, Moody Missouri and Mrs. Lou TARBELL, of Ottumwa, Iowa.
