December 13, 2004Mazie M. Messer, 96, of 807 W. Taylor Ave., died at 10:09 p.m. Friday, Dec. 10, 2004, at Nelson Nursing Home.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Marvin Robeck officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Raymond Funeral Home.
Memorials can be made to First Lutheran Church or Nelson Nursing Home van fund.
Mrs. Messer was born April 20, 1908, in Jefferson County, the daughter of George Morin and Minnie Emaline Hawk Lesher. She married Clifford Robert Messer March 16, 1932, at First Lutheran Church. He died Nov. 14, 1990.
She resided in North Dakota and Illinois as a child, and graduated from Trier High School in Wilmette, Ill. She later attended Parsons College and received formal training in the culinary arts. She was employed as a cook by Parkview Care Center and Nelson Nursing Home.
Mrs. Messer was a member of First Lutheran Church, an active member of Lutheran Women and taught Sunday school.
She was past president and member of Farm Bureau Women and had been a girls' 4-H leader. During the 1950s, she was very active in school reorganization. In addition, she was a very active member of Jefferson County Democratic Central Committee and a member of Good Cheer Club. She was named Fairfield Area Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year in the 1960s.
Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Smith and husband Lee of Beaver Creek, Ohio, and Sharon Stanley and husband Brad of Reno, Nev.; two sons, Kendall Messer and wife Barbara of Warrensburg, Mo., and Brian Messer and wife Joy of Fairfield; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one sister, Margaret Hamel of Las Vegas, Nev.; and one brother, George Lesher of Santa Maria, Calif.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Mary Messer; and one brother, Harold Lesher.
