Margaret (Peg) HOWELL NEWELL, aged 100, passed into eternal life at Valley View Village in Des Moines, Iowa, on January 16, 2017.
Peg was active and vivacious until a recent compression fracture in her spine took away her mobility. She was born in 1916 at home on the HOWELL family farm, SE of Glasgow, Iowa that was settled by her great-grandparents in 1839. The farm is still in the HOWELL family.
Surviving are her high school sweetheart and loving husband of 81 years, Kenneth, children, Carolyn BURNETT (Jim), Don NEWELL (Martha), Nancy PENN (Jack), Linda HUTCHINS (John), Craig NEWELL, a sister, Fern CRAFTON and a sister-in-law, Rachel HOWELL, both of Fairfield. Ken and Peg were also Grandparents of 10, Great-grandparents of 17, and Great-great-grandparents of 5.
After starting married life in Fairfield, Ken and Peg resided in Des Moines for 40 years, raising their family there. When Ken retired after 30 years with Firestone, they moved back to Fairfield, returning to Des Moines in 2006 to live at The Shores retirement residence and moving to assisted living at Valley View in 2011. Known for her sense of humor, she spent her life being a wonderful wife, mother, grandparent and a friend to all. She prided herself in learning the names of her fellow residents at Valley View and made a point of greeting each one by name, helping to make them feel at home there. She was active in PTA, Methodist Women's Circles, PEO, Questers, and was an accomplished genealogist with file cabinets fulll of family records. Her daughters were the best dressed kids on the block, thanks to her sewing expertise. She had many hobbies and was a can-do woman, collecting antiques, refinishing antique furniture, teaching chair caning at night school, and canning fruits and vegetables from their garden will into her old age. She was a perfectionist and made a successful business of re-caning antique chairs. These attributes have been passed down to her many descendants whose successes were a source of great pride to her. She and Ken were avid readers and bridge players, but recently played less, only due to lack of partners. She will be sorely missed by family and friends. Footnote: at 96 she had an I-pad!
Visitation for family & friends will be 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm, January 20, 2017 at Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield, Iowa. The funeral service is 10:30 am, Saturday, January 21, 2017 at Behner Funeral Home with Pastor Todd Holman officiating. Burial will follow the service at Glasgow Cemetery.
