William HELLKAMP

William HELLKAMP, 90, of Fairfield, died Sunday, Dec. 25, 2016, at Jefferson County Health Center in Fairfield.

A funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Catholic Church, with the Rev. Nick Adam officiating. Following Mass, the body will be cremated. Burial of cremains will be at a later date.

A rosary will be 4:30 p.m. Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church. Visitation will follow the rosary from 5-6:30 p.m. and the wake service will start at 6:30 p.m.

Memorials can be made to Fairfield Lions Club or St. Mary Catholic Church. Cards and memorials can be mailed to Dorothy HELLKAMP, 502 E. Burlington Ave., Fairfield 52556. Online condolences can be made to the family at www.behnerfh.com.

Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield is assisting with arrangements.

Mr. HELLKAMP was born Nov. 11, 1926, in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of George and Lillian HELLKAMP. He married Dorothy A. HOTZ June 10, 1950, in Delphos, Ohio.

Mr. HELLKAMP served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1945 to 1946. In 1949, he received a bachelor degree from the University of Cincinnati along with an ROTC commission as a lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. He returned to active duty with the Air Force in 1949 and served as a meteorologist. He attained the rank of lieutenant colonel. He was stationed in many parts of the world including Japan, the Philippines, Hawaii, and Spain. He earned a master's degree in meteorology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and served in Fairfield at Parsons College where he commanded a U.S. Air Force ROTC detachment.

Upon retirement in 1977, he and his family returned to Fairfield where they have resided ever since.

He was active for many years in the Lions Club, TENCO Foundation and served for 20 years as a member of the Board of Directors of Indian Hills Community College.

Survivors include: his wife, Dorothy; five children, Pamela FORDYCE of Traverse City, Michigan, Nancy O'NEILL with Gordon of Marietta, Georgia, Joyce SMITH with Don of The Villages, Florida, Tim HELLKAMP with Joyce of Orlando, Florida, and William S. HELLKAMP with Kathy of Shakopee, Minnesota; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one brother, Raymond HELLKAMP of Scotia, New York.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; and one siter, Jean STOEHR.
