Darnielle Wherry 'Shike' MARTIN

Darnielle Wherry "Shike" MARTIN, 81, of Bonaparte, died Saturday, Dec. 3, 2016, at home.

A graveside service will be held for family and closest friends at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Thompson Cemetery near Bonaparte (note: in Van Buren Co., IA). Longtime friend Barry Smith will speak at the service.

Memorial contributions can be made to HCI Hospice Care Services of Mt. Pleasant or to Friends of Shimek State Forest in Farmington and can be sent to Carol GUNN at PO Box 83, Bonaparte 52620.

Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua is handling the arrangements.

Mr. MARTIN was born May 6, 1935, in Mount Sterling, the son of Wherry and Maymie McCARTY MARTIN. He married Vivian Irene HACKARD NEAL May 1, 1960, in Kahoka, Missouri. She preceded him in death.

Mr. MARTIN graduated from Farmington High School, then joined the United States Army. He graduated from U.S. Army Aviation School and worked as an airplane mechanic. Following that, he served in the Army Reserves. He then worked for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources in Shimek State Forest, retiring with 35 years of service.

He and his wife also ran a shoe and leather repair shop for many years.

He loved animals and the outdoors. He coached a men's fast-pitch softball team for many years. He didn't know a stranger and loved to chat.

Survivors include: two daughters, Patricia JOHNSON and husband Frank of Bonaparte, and Carol GUNN and husband Allen of Bonaparte; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by: his parents; and one sister, Laurece WARD.
