Leland Warren HICKS, 69, of What Cheer, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 6 at 10:30 a.m. at the Harden Funeral Chapel in What Cheer with the Rev. Frances Baumert of What Cheer Christian Church officiating. Interment will follow at the Indianapolis Cemetery, west of What Cheer with the Keswick James Murphy Post 319 American Legion giving full military honors.

Leland HICKS was born July 4, 1932 in Linby, the son of Carl and Clara BARRON HICKS. He was reared and educated in Jefferson County and was graduated from Packwood High School in 1950. After graduating, Leland started farming with his dad in Jefferson County. On Aug. 3, 1952 he was united in marriage to Doris KIEWS at the Packwood Christian church.

In June of 1953 he was drafted in service for the Korean War. In 1954 he returned from Korea and was stationed at Fort Lewis, Wash. In 1955 Leland was discharged from the army and started farming in the Fremont area.

In 1960 Leland and Doris moved to the What Cheer area, and farmed there until Leland retired in 1995. Leland's hobbies included watching his kids play baseball and restoring John Deere Tractors. He was a member of the Popin Johnny's Club, the Lions Club, the Christian Church, and the American Legion.

Leland's memory is honored by his wife Doris Hicks of What Cheer; his son John HICKS and his wife Kelly; two daughters, Janice DUGGER and her husband Bob and Joyce FREESE and her husband Steve; and seven grandchildren; Mollie DUGGER, Megan DUGGER, Amanda FREESE, Evan FREESE, David HICKS, Benjamin HICKS and Cora HICKS.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
