Max BEAVERS

Max BEAVERS, 95, longtime Mt. Pleasant businessman and civic leader, died Sunday, Nov. 6, 2016, at Henry County Health Center in Mt. Pleasant.

The funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, with the Rev. Brian Shepley, celebrant. Interment will be in St. Alphonsus Catholic Cemetery (note: in Henry Co., IA), with full military rites provided by the Henry County Honor Guard.

Visitation will begin after noon Tuesday at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel, where the family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m. A Scripture service will be at 7 p.m.

Memorials can be given to St. Alphonsus Catholic Church or the Van Vorhies Haus. Online condolences can be made at www.olsonpowell.com.

Mr. BEAVERS was born Feb. 13, 1921, in West Grove, near Bloomfield, the son of Guy and Stella SPICER BEAVERS. He married Clementine A. WINNIKE Oct. 13, 1943. She died in 1978. He married Catherine Jean KEEFE Sept. 26, 1981.

While he was growing up, the family lived on farms in several southern Iowa communities, raising horses and cows and living off the land. His mother died when he was 13 years old, and the family had settled near Mt. Pleasant. He graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1939, where he had played football.

One of his early jobs was learning to cut meat from a local butcher. He held meat cutter jobs in Mt. Pleasant, Ottumwa and West Point.

Mr. BEAVERS entered the U.S. Army Dec. 28, 1942. He served during World War II in New Guinea and the Philippines. He and his unit returned, after the armistice was signed with Japan, by sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge on Dec. 25, 1945.

During his time in service, he developed into quite the card player, saving enough money for a down payment on a grocery store.

Mr. BEAVERS served two terms on the Mt. Pleasant City Council, was a member and served on the boards of the American Legion and VFW; was a lifetime member of St. Alphonsus Church, the Knights of Columbus, and the Jaycees.

He was an avid golfer and was a "chain gang" member during his sons' football years.

In his retirement years, he and wife Jean enjoyed traveling to Arizona and Texas.

Survivors include: wife, Jean; seven children, Ron BEAVERS with Joann, Rick BEAVERS with Rita LOHMAN, Randy BEAVERS with Karly, Kathy AICHER with Ted, Rob BEAVERS with Gayle, Kim STEFFES with Jim, and Kerry LUKO with Wendel; four stepchildren, Jim KEEFE, Elaine BROWN with Dave, Dennis KEEFE, and Teresa O'MEARA; three siblings, Gerald BEAVERS, Mansel BEAVERS, and Phyllis JOHNSON; 15 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his first wife, Clementine, he was preceded in death by: his parents; one daughter, Karol BEAVERS; one great-grandson; four brothers, Basil BEAVERS, Paul BEAVERS, Malcolm BEAVERS, and Merwyn BEAVERS; and one sister, Madelyn COOPER.
