Virgil E. WATSON, 85, of Stockport, died Tuesday morning, Oct. 4, 2016, at SunnyBrook Assisted Living in Fairfield.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Stockport United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Herb Shafer and the Rev. John Griffith officiating. Burial will be in Spencer Cemetery in Stockport (note: in Van Buren Co., IA).
Visitation will open at 2 p.m. Thursday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, with family present 5-7 p.m.
Memorials to Spencer Cemetery can be left at the funeral home, church or mailed to the family at 3000 W. Madison Ave., Apt. 201, Fairfield 52556.
Mr. WATSON was born April 23, 1931, on the family farm north of Stockport, the son of Cleo and Mamie WILSON WATSON. He married Darleen MCKEE Dec. 14, 1950, at Stockport Methodist Church.
He graduated from Stockport High School in 1948.
He worked at a factory in Fairfield. He and his wife lived in Fairfield until moving to Stockport in 1953. He then worked at the Stockport Oil Company. In 1966, he became half-owner of a plumbing, heating and electrical business. He sold the business in 1990, but continued to work there until his retirement in 1996.
After his wife's retirement, the WATSONs spent the next 10 years wintering in Apache Junction, Arizona.
Mr. WATSON had been a volunteer on the Stockport Fire Department.
He also served as a member of the Iowa National Guard for 10 years.
He was an avid St. Louis Cardinal and Iowa Hawkeye fan. He and his wife attended many of their grandchildren's activities. He enjoyed playing cards, camping, square dancing, sharing his home-made ice cream, chocolate chip cookies and caramel corn with family and friends.
Survivors include: his wife; one daughter, Annita RETTIG and her husband Richard of Tripoli; one son, Jan WATSON and his wife Mary of Urbandale; one sister, Eileen HARPER of Fairfield; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by: one son, Brent WATSON; one sister, Helen SYFERT; and one brother, Melvin WATSON.
