E. Kendall ROBERTS

E. Kendall ROBERTS, 94, of Keosauqua, died at 6:04 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 4, 2016, at Jefferson County Health Center.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, with the Rev. Ron Follmer officiating. Burial willl be in Fellows Cemetery at Keosauqua, with military rites by Beer-Barker Post No. 113.

Visitation will open at 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with the family present from 6:30-8 p.m.

Memorials to Beer Barker Post No. 113 American Legion Post or Keosauqua Fire Department can be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at PO Box 232, Keosauqua 52565.

Mr. ROBERTS was born March 1, 1922, in Albia, the son of Clyde and June WATKINS ROBERTS. He married Dorothy Esther SIEMON June 14, 1944, in Fairfield. She died July 16, 2014.

Mr. ROBERTS was a 1941 graduate of Albia High School. He and his family moved to Keosauqua where they operated Roberts Super Valu grocery store.

He served in the United States Armed Forces 1942 - 1946, with active duty in the European theater. After returning from the war, he was employed by the Van Buren County Farm Service. In 1958, he started working for the Iowa Department of Transportation. He retired from the D.O.T. as a maintence (sic) supervisor in 1985, then assisted Robert Pedrick at Pedrick Funeral Home.

Mr. ROBERTS also has been a firemanship training instructor for Iowa State College in Ames for 12 years and a Red Cross first-aid instructor for 46 years; he was a 12.5 gallon blood donor for the Red Cross.

Mr. ROBERTS was a lifetime member of the Keosauqua Christian Church serving in numerous offices.

He was a 71-year member of the Beer-Barker Post No. 113 American Legion in Keosauqua having been awarded a lifetime membership from his post. He served as first district commander and state department vice commander.

He also was a member of the Van Buren County Safety Committee, Van Buren County Farm Bureau, Keosauqua Commercial Club and was county chairman of the United Fund of Iowa. He served on the Keosauqua Volunteer Fire Department for 39 years and was the fire chief for 25 years.

He enjoyed golfing for several years, but his favorite activity was cheering on his grandchildren in their sports activities and spending time with his family.

Survivors include: his four children, Paul ROBERTS and wife Becky, Maureen SEDLACEK and husband Mark, and Gloria SPROUSE and husband Rod, all of Keosauqua, and Alan ROBERTS and wife Sue of Mountain Home, Idaho; 14 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.
