Yvonne HARWARD, 86, of Des Moines and formerly of Douds, died Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2016, at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines (note: in Polk Co., IA).

Arrangements are pending at Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua.

Yvonne E. HARWARD

Yvonne E. HARWARD, 85, of Des Moines and formerly of Douds, died Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2016, at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines.

In accordance with her wishes, the body has been cremated. A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. today in Leando Cemetery (note: in Van Buren Co., IA), with the Rev. Steven Benson officiating.

Memorials to Taylor House - Unity Point Hospice or Sigma Alpha Iota Music Therapy can be mailed to the family at 1250 11th St. S.E., Apt 8211, Grimes 50111.

Pedrick Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.

Ms. HARWARD was born Jan. 3, 1931, in Ottumwa, the daughter of Hollis and Ethel THOMAS HARWARD.

Ms. HARWARD graduated in 1948 from Douds-Leando Consolidated Schools. She received a bachelor's degree in music education from Drake University in 1952 and earned her master's degree in 1959. She used her education to teach vocal music and piano in Iowa, Michigan and Kansas.

She was a lifetime member of Sigma Alpha Iota, sang in many churches and at recitals as a soloist. She loved fishing, quilting, gardening, bird watching, classical music and old hymns.

She had two mottos: "Keep on "Trucking" and "What a Country" and wrote poems and stories about her life. Her relationship with God through Jesus Christ was most important.

Survivors include: her three children, Michael JOHNSON and spouse Kris of Altoona, John JOHNSON of Clive, and Stephanie JOHNSON of Grimes; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one brother, Bob HARWARD of Indianola.
