Samuel G. NELSON, 88, of rural Bonaparte died at 9:10 a.m. today, Monday Aug. 22, 2016, at his home.

Arrangements are pending at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua.

Samuel G. NELSON

Samuel G. NELSON, 88, of rural Bonaparte, died Monday morning, Aug. 22, 2016, at his home from esophageal cancer.

The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, with the Rev. Mark Caston officiating. Burial will be in Vale Cemetery, north of Bonaparte, with military honors by Sargeant-Osweiller Post No. 563 American Legion of Bonaparte (note: in Van Buren Co., IA).

Visitation will open at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with family present 5-7 p.m.

Memorials to Vale Cemetery can be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at 31823 200th St., Bonaparte 52620.

Mr. NELSON was born Nov. 9, 1927, on a farm west of Mount Sterling, the son of Samuel Roy and Sadie Mae GARRETT NELSON. He married Mary FAIRCHILD March 9, 1954, in Lancaster, Missouri. She died Sept. 6, 2006.

The family moved to Stockport where he attended country school in Utica through seventh grade. Then the family moved to Milton, and he graduated in 1946 from Milton High School.

He served in the Army for two years during the Korean War (sic - Korean Conflict) as a corporal stationed in Germany on the Russian border.

Mr. NELSON lived in Harrisburg Township, north of Bonaparte, for the last 54 years. He farmed, owned and ran a service station in Milton, drove a rendering truck, hauled coal, worked at the Army Ammunitions Plant in West Burlington, Barker Equipment Company in Keosauqua and Riverside Plastics in Bonaparte. He also drove a school bus for Harmony schools.

Mr. NELSON enjoyed playing rummy cards and visiting with his grandchildren.

Survivors include: eight children, Dennis NELSON, Maria NELSON and Curtis NELSON with wife Bonnie, all of Bonaparte, Mike NELSON of Danville, Marcia NELSON and Terri NELSON of Des Moines, Brad NELSON of Kahoka, Missouri, and Greg NELSON of Keokuk; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one brother, Pete NELSON of rural Farmington.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by: one son, Randy NELSON; one grandson; one great-granddaughter; two sisters, Catherine BICKEL and Madeline EDEN; four brothers, Archie, LeRoy, Harold and Joe Dale NELSON; and his parents.
