Howard Junior GARRELS

Howard Junior GARRELS, 73, of Eldon, died Wednesday, July 20, 2016, at his home.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Eldon Cemetery (note: in Wapello Co., IA), with the Rev. Dave Albert officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be directed to the Eldon Depot Museum. An online guestbook is at www.kremerfh.com.

Kremer Funeral Home in Eldon is assisting with arrangements.

Mr. GARRELS was born March 25, 1943, in Hedrick, the son of Howard and Blanche ECHELBERRY GARRELS. He married Barbara Ann ROBERTO LOFTIS Jan. 29, 1966, in San Francisco, California. She died in 2010.

He attended school in Eldon, and graduated with the Cardinal High School Class of 1961. Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy, serving from October 1961 until February 1966.

After his return from the service, Mr. GARRELS began working for Rock Island Railroad as a brakeman and conductor. In 1980, he was laid off from the railroad, but worked at Louden Manufacturing Company in Fairfield, Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middleton, Eldon Elevator and Lumber Yard in Eldon, as well as being self employed as a handyman.

In 1983, he returned to school at Indian Hills Community College and graduated from the culinary arts school. He began working as a food service coordinator for the state of Iowa at the Mt. Pleasant Correctional Facility.

When Mr. GARRELS wasn't working, he enjoyed spending time outdoors, hunting and fishing, as well as singing and playing the guitar.

Survivors include: four children, Joseph LOFTIS and wife Erin of Indiana, Jeffrey LOFTIS of Eldon, Rick GARRELS and wife Patty of Eldridge and Cynthia TUFTS and husband Shawn of Florida; one brother, Wayne HIGDON of Eldon; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by: his parents; one son, Roger; and three siblings, Francis GARRELS, Thomas MYERS, and Barbara MOORE.
