Donald L. HETZLER, 77, of Hazen, North Dakota, died at 8:30 a.m. Monday, July 4, 2016, at Sakakawea Medical Center in Hazen.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Beulah, North Dakota, with the Rev. Kent Sperry officiating. A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Lebanon Cemetery, west of Keosauqua, with the Rev. Elizabeth Bell officiating (note: in Van Buren Co., IA).
Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua is in charge of the graveside service.
Mr. HETZLER and his twin brother Ronald were born Jan. 29, 1939, in Cantril, the sons of Edwin Maynard and Alice EPPERLY HETZLER. He married DeEtta R. PETERSON Sept. 26, 1987.
Mr. HETZLER grew up and attended school in Cantril. He attended auctioneer school. He received his GED at the age of 42.
He began working at Dakota Gasification Company in 1983 and retired in 2005. He was a shift maintenance mechanic and crane operator.
He and his wife resided in Hazel for all of their married life.
Mr. HETZLER enjoyed company, traveling and camping, as well as being an avid fisherman and hunter. He also enjoyed dancing, music, and food, especially a good hamburger and ice cream. He liked to read and had a love for books. He was very knowledgeable in almost everything and was a collector of almost everything. He loved birds and animals and going to the river to look for rocks. He especially loved being a grandpa and his uncle "Wa Wa."
Survivors include: his wife; two daughters, Tammy AKOVENKO and husband Mike of Globe, Arizona, and Laurie REED and husband Donnie of Ellwood City, Pennsylvania; one son, Cody HETZLER and wife Kaicee of Hazen; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three brothers, James HETZLER of Ottumwa, Ronald HETZLER of Madison, Wisconsin, and Larry HETZLER of Plattsmouth, Nebraska; one half-brother, Eric HETZLER of Lacy, Washington; and two half-sisters, Olga and Susan of California.
He was preceded in death by: his son, Michael; and his parents.
