Joann Elizabeth FEDLER FRITZ

Born on November 30, 1936 to Robert and Hilda FEDLER in Ft. Madison, Iowa.

Died on June 21, 2016 in Plano, TX, after a lengthy illness.

Joann attended St. Mary Elementary School and Catholic Central High Schools in Ft. Madison, Iowa. She graduated from St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1957.

Joann worked one year in labor and delivery at Sacred Heart Hospital in Ft. Madison.

She married John W. FRITZ on September 13, 1958 and moved to rural Brighton, Iowa. Joann was an active farm wife, working beside John, whether it be in the field, or in with the livestock. A large garden was always planted and tended to. Joann continued working in labor and delivery at Washington County Hospital, with an eventual move to Fairfield County Hospital. A short term request to cover a maternity leave at Medical Arts Clinic resulted in Joann working as a clinic RN from 1964 to 1989 for Drs. Egli, Strong, Ryan and Sutton. She later moved with Dr. Sutton to his solo practice in downtown Fairfield.

Shortly after John's death, Joann left the farm and moved to Fairfield. She opened The Sewing Room in June of 1989, a fabric and quilting store. Her niche of sewing and teaching the art of quilting touched many.

Joann retired in 2002 and moved to Carrollton, Texas to be near her daughter, Sandy, and family.

She remained involved with teaching quilting classes at the Farmers Branch Senior Center. Joann made and donated many of her quilts to St. Joseph's Church in Brighton for their annual fall bazaar, the Breast Cancer Society, Strawberry Birth Mark Foundation, Newborns in Need, dozens for the Mary Immaculate School auction and sent hundreds of Christmas stockings to our troops. Her biggest joy was cheering from the stands watching her grandsons play their various sports. Prior to her move to Texas, she never missed a trip to Texas to celebrate their birthdays.

Survivors include her daughter, Sandy, and son in law, Phillip SCHLUTERMAN of Carrollton, TX, grandsons, Andrew of Dallas, TX and Michael of Carrollton, TX, two brother in laws (sic), 4 sister in laws (sic) and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Joann was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 1987, her parents, Robert and Hilda, her grandson, Christopher and sister, Roberta FEDLER LEDGER.

A memorial Mass was held at Mary Immaculate Church in Farmers Branch, TX on June 30th at 3:00.

Joann will make her final journey to Iowa for Mass and burial at St. Joseph's Church in East Pleasant Plain, IA on Saturday, July 23. Visitation will be at 9:30, with Mass to follow at 10:30.

In lieu of flowers Joann has asked that you donate blood at your local blood bank. If you cannot donate she suggested you spend an hour of your time with a lonely senior.
