BIRMINGHAM - Duane M. "Don" SCHWANTES, age 78, of Birmingham, died Sunday, May 29 at the Hospice House in Ottumwa.
A memorial service and gathering of family and friends will be at 3 p.m., Saturday, June 18 at the Birmingham City Park with Pastor Tim De Vries. Interment of cremains will be at Maple Hill Cemetery (note: in Birmingham, Van Buren Co., IA).
The family requests no flowers and memorials be made to the Hospice House of Ottumwa and sent to: Hospice House at 927 East Pennsylvania Ave., Ottumwa, Iowa 52501 or may be sent to: Raymond Funeral Home, 112 West Burlington Ave., Fairfield, Iowa 52556.
The Raymond Funeral Home of Fairfield and Birmingham is assisting the family with arrangements.

SCHWANTES was born July 17, 1937 at Loyal, Wisconsin, the son of Maynard L. and Elsie GRAUMAN SCHWANTES. He worked for his parents Curly and Elsie at the A & W Root beer stand in Fairfield where he met his future wife Aletha Joyce WILLIAMS. They were married Nov. 7, 1960, in Fairfield.
He moved to Birmingham in 1962. He owned and operated Schwantes Construction Company for over 50 years.
He loved gardening and his orchard which had many varies (sic) of trees. He loved spending time with his Mastiff dogs and had 3 of them over the years.
He is preceded in death by his wife, his parents, son Maynard, and step-son Danny RYAN.
Surviving are his daughters: Lisa (Michael) SCHULZ of Lindale, Texas, Irvin SCHWANTES of Ottumwa, daughter Lynn (Kory) HACKWELL of Granbury, Texas; seven grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
