Philip W. 'Phil' HIRSCHLER

Philip W. (Phil) HIRSCHLER, 75 of Fairfield, died Saturday, April 24, 2016, at University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City.

According to his wishes, his body has been cremated. The funeral will be at the Presbyterian Church in Fairfield on May 17th at 11 AM with Rev Joe Phipps officiating. Family will be present for visitation prior to the service. Memorials can be made to Yellowstone National Park Foundation or First Presbyterian Church, Fairfield, Iowa

Phil was born on April 12, 1941 to the late Sherman and Hazel HIRSCHLER in Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin. He shared this birthday with his sister, Roberta, who is three years older. When Phil was 7 years old, the family returned to southeastern Iowa and settled in Fairfield. He graduated from Fairfield High School in 1959, trained and served with the Iowa National Guard/Army, after which he attended and graduated from Parsons College. Phil then attended Syracuse University in New York and received his Masters in German and English Literature. He moved to Lompoc, Ca where he taught junior high American history and German for nine years and then moved to the high school where he taught his true love of American Literature and coached discus throwing.

He married Janice WIGGINS while at Syracuse. They had two sons, Greg and Kurt. They were divorced. While attending his 30 year high school class reunion, he became reacquainted with classmate Barbara (BURGER) FERELL They soon married, and later returned to Fairfield after he retired from teaching for over thirty years in the Lompoc California School District.

He pursued his hobbies of painting oil landscapes, fly fishing, hunting, gardening (especially roses), baseball, and reading with great passion. He eagerly shared his knowledge of these passions with anyone who asked.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents and parents.

Survivors include his wife, sister(Roger), two sons-Kurt(Adriane), Greg(Judy), 2 stepsons-Mark and Scott(Kelly) FERELL, 1 stepdaughter-Donna HAFNER(Roger) and 8 grandchildren; Ryan HIRSCHLER, Grant and Colin FERELL, Marie and Michelle HAFNER, Jillian, Samuel, and Alex HIRSCHLER, a nephew, nieces, and cousins.
