Leonard Phillip DEUTSCH

Leonard Phillip DEUTSCH, 75, of Rochelle, Illinois, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 2016, at Rochelle Rehab & Health Care Center.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Catholic Church of St. Patrick in Rochelle.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Friday at Unger-Horner Funeral Home in Rochelle, with the rosary recited at 4 p.m.

Viewing will be 9:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church, prior to the funeral Mass.

Interment will be at St. Patrick Cemetery. A luncheon will follow at St. Patrick Parish Center.

Mr. DEUTSCH was born Jan. 26, 1941, in East Pleasant Plain, the son of Isadore M. DEUTSCH Jr. and Modesta M. SHELANGOSKI DEUTSCH. He married Marlene Ann Veronica BELTRAMEA June 15, 1963, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Fairfield.

Mr. DEUTSCH joined the Iowa National Guard Red Bull Division and attended basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

He attended Parsons College and worked at Harper Brush Works in Fairfield. He worked in the insurance industry from 1962-2006.

His interests included acting and playing basketball and baseball. He was a Little League coach, an avid bowler, card player and gardener. His favorite sports teams were the Iowa Hawkeyes, Pittsburgh Pirates and Green Bay Packers. He enjoyed reading western fiction and military history.

He helped start the RTHS Speech Support Group, the Alzheimer's Support Group and the Diabetic Support Group. Later he helped to get ADA accreditation for the Diabetic Support Group. He volunteered at the grade schools, foster parented for Focus House, and delivered for Meals on Wheels.

Mr. DEUTSCH was an active member of St. Patrick Catholic Church. He was a sacristan and altar server for charasmatic Masses, a lector commentator, attended Christ Renews His Parish, Tres Dias and member of finanace committees. He served at the Fall Bazaar, Mothers' Brunch, St. Joseph Table and Lenten fish fries. He delivered Communion to the home bound, drove friends to Mass or appointments and was an RCIA sponsor. He believed and lived his life in the real presence of Jesus Christ at each Mass. He was very ecumenical and reached out to many traditions.

He taught his children and grandchildren to be honest, hard workers.

He was one of the first to wear an insulin pump to control his diabetes. He had a kidney transplant in 1997.

Survivors include: his wife; two sons, Matthew DEUTSCH of Forest Park, Illinois, Douglas DEUTSCH and wife Anne of Naperville, Illinois; one daughter, Mary MOORE and husband John of Naperville; six grandchildren; and one sister, Marie D. SLOWIAK of Rochelle.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; children and grandchildren.
