Ephriam STOUT, the last survivor of the original settlers of Jefferson County, died yesterday afternoon at five o'clock at the home of his daughter S.W. FRY, nine miles southeast of the city. He had been bedfast for about six weeks, but had gradually been failing for some time.

Mr. STOUT was born In Illinois on August 26, 1836, and the same year his parents moved to Jefferson County, Iowa, where he had since resided. In 1858, near Glasgow, he was united in marriage to Miss Angelline MILLER, Rev. Heaton performing the ceremony. Besides his wife, he is survived by the following children, Mrs. S.W. FRY, A.L. STOUT, W.C. STOUT, Mrs. H.C. PATTISON, Mrs. William McWHIRTER and Mrs. A. FRAME.

Mr. STOUT is the last one of the pioneers who came to this county in the first year of its settlement, and for many years has been one of the best workers who commanded the respect of everyone and his scores of friends will regret to learn of his death. Last month the STOUT homestead was burned down and since that time he and his wife have their home with their daughter, Mrs. FRY, who faithfully administered to his every want.

The funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at one o'clock from Ebenzer Church of which church he was a faithful member. Rev Burdine will have charge of the services and the remains will be interred in the Wright Cemetery southeast of the city.

Note: There is some conflict with his year of birth; his 1912 biography gives 1830 as the year, as does the 1900 census. However, his gravestone has 1831 for the birth year, and these obituaries say 1836. Will use 1830 at this point.
