OBITUARY

CHARLES F. GEORGE

Charles F. GEORGE was born in Oswego, New York, May 15, 1832, and died in Fairfield, Iowa, July 20, 1922, aged 90 years, 2 months and 5 days. He had been in declining health for a few months and the cause of his demise was principally the infirmities of old age. He was married and passed away in the same home, which was at one time known as the Mendenhall home on West Burlington street in this city.

His father and mother, Joel and Elizabeth GEORGE, had preceded him in death a number of years -- both having lived to a ripe old age. Charles the son and subject of this sketch, was the last surviving member of his family.

Mr. GEORGE came from Joliet, Illinois to Fairfield, Iowa, in the year 1859 and began work as a jeweler in this city, and continued in this business, except four years in Montana, till (sic) August, 1892 when he sold his store to T. E. McLean, who had previously been in his employ.

On February 12, 1861, he was united in marriage to Esther A. MENDENHALL of Fairfield who still survives him. Of this union was born one son, Edgar I. GEORGE, who is now a physician and has been an eye specialist for the last thirty-one years in the city of Chicago.

He united with the Methodist Episcopal church about fifty years ago, and he frequently attended preaching services until old age and physical disabilities prevented him.

Mr. GEORGE had been a Free Mason for over fifty years, and was made one in Joliet Lodge No. 42, Joliet, Illionis (sic), in the year 1854. He was made a Royal Arch Mason in Vermont, Illinois in the year 1855. After he came to Fairfield he joined Clinton Lodge No. 15, and McCord Chapter No. 5. To (sic - He) has been an active member and has held at various times important offices in this lodge. At the time of his death he was a member of the "Masonic Veterans Association of Iowa", which is an organization of Master Masons who have been such for a period of fifty years.

He was an affectionate husband, a kind father and good neighbor. He was a man of generous disposition and of upright moral character, and will be greatly missed by the family, relatives and numerous friends.

The funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 form (sic) the home in charge of Dr. W. R. Keesey of Mount Pleasant, and also of the Masonic order. The burial was in the Fairfield Abbey.

PIONEER BUSINESS MAN OF FAIRFIELD DIES, AGED NINETY

Chas. F. GEORGE, for Many Years Prominent In Jewlery Business Here, Passes Away.

Charles F. GEORGE, or, as he was more affectionately known, "Charley" GEORGE, pioneer jeweler of this city, died July 20 at his home in this city aged ninety, following a decline of health for several months. His death was due to the infirmities of age, and came to him in the same home in which he was married--the old Mendenhall property on West Burlington street. Until the last few months Mr. GEORGE was a familiar figure on the streets, despite his age; his mind was keen and he took a lively interest in current affairs, particularly politics. He was a man highly esteemed by those who had the pleasure of his acquaintance in the day when he was one of the city's prominent business men.
