Peter Whitman MINKLER

Peter Whitman MINKLER, 65, of Hatch, Utah, and Gautier, Mississippi, died at home Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2016, after a battle with cancer.

A memorial service will be 5 p.m. March 21 at St. John's Episcopal Church in Pascagoula, Mississippi.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to Hospice of Light, part of the Singing River Hospital System in Pascagoula, the Alzheimer's Association, the National Down Syndrome Society, or the animal shelter of the donor's choice. Online condolences can be left at www.obryantokeefe.com.

O'Bryant-O'Keefe Funeral Homes in Pascagoula is assisting with arrangements.

Mr. MINKLER was born March 2, 1950, in Pascagoula, the son of Frederick C. "Bud" MINKLER and Eleanor Patricia VAN METRE MINKLER. He married Gertrude A. "Trudy" CARSON Aug. 3, 1978, in the St. Francis outdoor chapel at the Kanuga Episcopal Conference Center in Hendersonville, North Carolina.

He attended public schools in Pascagoula and graduated from the Asheville School in North Carolina in 1968.

He entered Harvard College in the class of 1972, but took time out for military service during the Vietnam War (sic - Vietnam Conflict), training in the Army's Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, and serving in Germany.

Before he resumed his Harvard education, he also served as a boat captain in Maine, then graduated with the class of 1976.

After their marriage, the MINKLERs settled in Menlo Park, California, to raise their family.

Mr. MINKLER worked for the U.S. Geological Survey, including an assignment in Alaska; operated a charter sailboat company on San Francisco Bay; worked for Bay Area-based power cogeneration research companies International Power and Technology and Electric Power Research Institute; and earned an online master's degree in business administration from the University of Phoenix.

After both sons graduated from college, Mr. and Mrs. MINKLER built an off-the-grid log retirement home in Hatch, Utah, and volunteered with the National Parks Service in the area.

Mr. MINKLER loved boating, and spent much time with family at Lake Powell as well as piloting the riverboat Canyon King. He enjoyed hiking and almost any kind of outdoor activity. He loved every living creature, and had a unique way of communicating with animals. His sense of mischief was subtle and engaging, and he was kind. He was a great cook. He sang bass in the church choir conducted by his wife for over 20 years, played jazz piano, and could whistle like a songbird.

Survivors include: his wife Trudy; two sons, Ricker Whitman MINKLER and wife Yvette of Visalia, California, and Charles Winslow MINKLER of Menlo Park; his siblings, Penny FITZ-RANDOLPH of Fairfield, "Rick" F.C. MINKLER III of Gautier, and David of Pascagoula; and stepfather, George HOWELL of Gautier.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; and one son, Michael Peter MINKLER.
