Jack Bratz Calhoun, 84, of Fremont, Neb., and formerly of Fairfield, died Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004, at his home of lung cancer.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Lattin-Dugan-Chambers Funeral Chapel in Fremont, Neb., with the Rev. Don Botic officiating.

A memorial has been established to Dodge County Humane Society in Fremont.

Mr. Calhoun was born March 28, 1920, in Centerville to Vane and Hilda Bratz Calhoun. He married Marilyn Morris Aug. 13, 1945, in Kansas City, Kan.

He attended Centerville High School in Centerville and graduated from Ottumwa High School in Ottumwa in 1938. He received a degree in business administration from Drake University in Des Moines in 1948. A United States Army staff sergeant in the 34th Infantry Division, 165h Infantry Regiment Rifle, Company G, he served from 1941 to 1945 in Ireland, Scotland, England and Italy.

Mr. Calhoun was employed as a certified public accountant in Iowa. After employment at Parsons College and as treasurer of John J. Pershing College in Beatrice, Neb., he moved to Fremont in 1941 as business manager for Midland Lutheran College.

He was a member and former elder of the Presbyterian Church in Fremont, and member of Arthur Peters Memorial Garden Club, the American Legion and Kiwanis Club. He received certificates of appreciation from Keep Fremont Beautiful and Clarmar Elementary Science Fair where he volunteered as judge.

He enjoyed gardening, reading, learning, and telling stories of the war, students and humorous incidents. He also collected stamps and enjoyed Big Band music. As community service in the low-income ministry of his church, he shared the harvest from his gardens with the community.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Marta Jane Calhoun; one son, John Brian Calhoun; one grandson; and one brother, Robert Vane Calhoun.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
