Dennis E. SAMMONS, 68, of Rome, Iowa, died Sunday, Jan. 3, 2016, at his home.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Murphy Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant.

Dennis E. SAMMONS

Dennis E. SAMMONS, 68, of Rome, Iowa, died Sunday, Jan. 3, 2016, at his home with his family at his side.

The funeral will be 9 a.m. Saturday at Rome Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Grant Cemetery in rural Rome (note: in Henry Co., IA).

Visitation begins after noon Friday, with the family present from 5-7 p.m., at Murphy Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant.

Memorials can be directed to the Hospice House in West Burlington and or to Rome Baptist Church. Online condolences can be left at www.murphyfuneralandmonuments.com.

Mr. SAMMONS was born March 4, 1947, in Mt. Pleasant, the son of Clarence and Irma LEE SAMMONS. He married Georigia CALHOUN June 4, 1966, in Kahoka, Missouri.

He worked for his father, then worked for Vega for 13 years, Ceco Building Systems for one year, then Ideal Ready Mix for 35 years, retiring in 2012. He, his wife and their son Dean operated Deano's Restaurant for 23 years.

He was a former mayor of Rome and was currently serving on Rome City Council.

He enjoyed racing, square dancing and Christmastime. He was known for his ability to fix anything.

He attended Rome Baptist Church.

Survivors include: his wife Georigia of Rome; his children, Edward SAMMONS and wife Brenda of Rome, Dean SAMMONS and wife Susan of Rome, PareSetta SAMMONS of Rome and Annette GERLEMAN and husband Tim of Mt. Pleasant; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Guy SAMMONS of Mt. Pleasant; and two sisters, Esta FERGUSON of Donnellson and Rosie WIGGINS of Mt. Pleasant.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; and three brothers, Darrell, Don and Henry.
