Dwight D. SHORT, 82, of Cantril died at 6:27 a.m. Monday Dec. 28, 2015 at home. Arrangements are pending at Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua.

Dwight D. SHORT

CANTRIL - Dwight D. SHORT, 82, of Cantril died at 6:27 A.M. Monday December 28, 2015 in his home from a long succession of debilitating strokes and kidney failure related to diabetes.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday December 31, 2015 at Cantril United Methodist Church with Pastor Donna Olinger officiating. Visitation will open at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua with family present from 5-7 p.m. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Cantril (note: in Van Buren Co., IA). Memorials to Maple Grove or HCI Hospice may be left at the funeral home, church or mailed to the family at P.O. Box 224, Cantril, IA 52542.

He was born October 3, 1933 near Cantril to Earl and Twila DODDS SHORT. Dwight graduated from Cantril High School in 1952 and married his high school sweetheart, Barbara WILEY on February 20, 1953.

Dwight and Barb started a trucking and feed business that later became Short Feed and Grain in Cantril along with his Dad and later with his sons, Dan and Bob. He and Barb raised four kids, hogs and cattle.

They owned and operated the Starlite Café and Short Truck Stop at the Junction of Highways 1 and 2. Dwight was an active community member, supporter of Fox Valley School, 4H clubs, member of Cantril Lions Club, past Mayor of Cantril, a businessman and member of Cantril United Methodist Church.

After retiring, Dwight worked at Lacey State Park with the Green Thumb program.

Survivors include his wife Barbara, two sons, Dan SHORT (Kelley Ketchum) of Memphis, Missouri, and Bob SHORT (Deb) of Keosauqua; two daughters, Becky SHORT of Ursa, IL and Penny SHORT of Cantril, a sister, Donna SMITH (Butch) of Cantril, a good family friend, Darrell Kruse, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, several nieces, nepehws and many friends.
