Warren H. HOLMES

Warren H. HOLMES, 95, passed away on December 11, 2015 from complications related to a recent stroke. He resided in Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina where he lived since 2009.

Warren was born July 27, 1920 on a farm in Birmingham, Iowa, the second youngest of Elmer and Susan. He joined the Medical Unit of the Iowa National Guard at 16. While attending Parsons College, the unit was activated, one of the first sent to Europe in WWII. Warren returned to the states for OCS, and after his commission was an administrator of a medical unit on the Aleutian Islands, Alaska.

He attended evening classes at Long Island University while serving in Brooklyn, graduating with a degree in accounting. He received a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Harvard University in 1956.

Colonel HOLMES retired in 1970 after 30 years of active duty. Some of his more important assignments included Director of Plans and Hospitalization for all Air Force medical facilities in Europe; Comptroller of Defense Medical Procurement; Supply Center Director of Logistics Air Force Medical Service; and Administrator for two of the Air Force's largest hospitals.

He received numerous awards during his career, the most significant being the Legion of Merit and the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal. He also received the National Service Medal; American Campaign Medal; European African Campaign Medal; World War II Victory Medal; Army Commendation Medal; Air Force Commendation Medal; Air Force Outstanding Unit Award; and the Chief of Medical Service Corp Badge.

After his retirement from the Air Force, Warren served as the administrator of hospital facilities in New York and Maryland. From 1975-1986, he was the administrator of Gnaden Huetten Memorial Hospital in Lehighton, Pa. where he continued to reside until moving to North Carolina. He was an avid golfer, and also enjoyed travel with his wife Ruth. Warren was a lifetime Mason; Member of the American Legion; VFW; Retired Officer Association; former member of the Rotary; the American College of Hospital Administrators; and the American College of Health Care Executives.

Warren was very proud of being inducted into the Fairfield High School Wall of Honor in 2008 as a distinguished graduate of his high school. He graduated from Fairfield in 1939 where he played football and basketball. Warren considered Fairfield as his home, and enjoyed returning for reunions with family and friends. The last time was for his birthday this July.

He is survived by his sons Warren and Douglas; daughter-in-law Gayle, grandson Christopher, and great grandsons Jake and Zack. He was also preceded in death by his parents and brothers Wendell, Ben, George, Glenn, and sister Beryl McINTIRE.

Colonel HOLMES will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery.
