John FERRELL

John FERRELL, of Tucson, Arizona, and formerly of Fairfield, died Sunday, Nov. 8, 2015, in Tucson.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Nov. 25 at Grace St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Tucson. A reception will follow.

Memorial donations can be sent to 2708 N. Gill Ave., Tucson, AZ 85719.

Angel Valley Funeral Home in Tucson handled arrangements.

Mr. FERRELL was born March 14, 1925, in Maryville, Missouri, the son of Harry and Susan FERRELL. He married Elinor MacLEOD; they divorced. He married Carolyn MARCH. She preceded him in death.

Mr. FERRELL was known in the classical music world of Iowa City. He was a professor of violin at the University of Iowa from 1954-1974, and he played second violin with the Iowa String Quartet and Stradivari Quartet. As a member of the Iowa String quartet, he performing (sic) regularly in Europe as well as the states. He also had the opportunity to play a priceless Stradivarius instrument from the Cochran Gallery in New York, and the quartet made its first public performance playing the Stradivarius instruments on May 19, 1967, in MacBride Auditorium in Iowa City.

For two years in the 1990s, he lived with his daughter, Susie NIEDERMEYER JAMES in Fairfield, teaching violin privately and occasionally performing with her.

In 1974, Mr. FERRELL's professional life took him to Tucson where he became professor of violin at the University of Arizona, which included duties as Tucson Symphony's concert master, a position he held for 23 years, retiring in 1997.

His students and colleagues remember Mr. FERRELL as gentle, yet authoritative, the master of understatement and quiet confidence. He preferred to talk about others rather than himself.

He loved animals and has a passion for English riding. For years he and his wife Carolyn trained their horses in dressage and jumping and competed at local shows.

Survivors include: three daughters, Suzanne JAMES of Fairfield, Rebecca FERRELL-HENRICH and Norma STARKMAN; four grandsons; and one great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his wife Carolyn.
