Ona 'Marie' DORSETT

Ona "Marie" DORSETT, 96, formerly of Fairfield, died Friday, Oct. 2, 2015, in Marion (note: in Linn Co., IA).

The funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Fairfield, with the Rev. John Kermott and the Rev. Jim Wotherspoon officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield.

Visitation for family will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. DORSETT was born Nov. 18, 1918, in Kay County, Oklahoma, the daughter of Claude R. and Ruby SPENCER MEADE. She married Howard DORSETT Feb. 8, 1947, in Houston, Texas.

She attended schools in Blackwell, Oklahoma, and graduated from Blackwell High School in 1936. After attending Oklahoma Baptist University for two years and Oklahoma State University, she received a bachelor's degree in elementary education in 1940. She taught in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, lower-grades classroom and music in first- through sixth-grades. She taught in Houston Texas during World War II. She was employed at Humble Oil Company in the annuities and benefit department during World War II in Houston, Texas.

Mrs. DORSETT and her husband moved to Fairfield in September of 1947. She attended University of Iowa and earned a master's degree in developmental reading and was a certified reading specialist in 1973. She had a strong interest in children's literature and picture books. She retired from teaching in the Ottumwa elementary schools in 1984.

Mrs. DORSETT had a lifelong interest in music. She was a member of American Association of University Women, International Reading Association, lifelong member of National Education Association, Iowa State Education Association, Iowa Retired School Personnel Association, International Federation of University Woman and a member of First Baptist Church in Fairfield.

Survivors include: four children, Stephen DORSETT and wife Jeanne of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Ronald DORSETT of Kennesaw, Georgia, Jane O'BRIEN and husband Craig of Marion and David DORSETT of Omaha, Nebraska; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Howard DORSETT; one grandson; and one sister.
