Melvin Lee STORY, 79, of Birmingham passed away Monday, September 21, 2015 at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. He was born January 14, 1936 in rural Clark County, Missouri to J.C. "Red" and Mary Adeline (PRATT) STORY. He married Donna Lee COUNTRYMAN on December 8, 1962 in Kahoka, Missouri.
Melvin lived most of his life in Van Buren County and graduated from Stockport High School in 1955. After graduation, Melvin worked for Hallett Construction Company before being drafted into the U.S. Army. Highlights of his military career included being selected to serve on the Honor Guard during the John F Kennedy inaugural parade and chosen to assist the West Point Cadets. After completing his tour of duty he briefly returned to the road construction employment with Hallett before then becoming a machinist at Rockwell International in 1962 where he worked until his retirement in August 1997. He was a long-time member of the U.A.W. Machinist Union. He enjoyed traveling the U.S., Hawkeye ball-games, country music, and spending time with family and friends. He often said his best day was when he was together with his three girls.
His family left to celebrate his life are, his wife, three girls, Debi (Don) STEELE of Fairfield, Kathy (Randy ARNOLD) STORY of Pella, and Rhonda (Rick) ROBINSON of Fairfield; 5 grandchildren: Mike (Ashley) HARMON, Kyle HARMON, Abby STICKELS, Rachel (Shawn) DORMAN, Ross ROBINSON; 3 step-grandchildren: Sandra STEELE, Nathan (Shana) STEELE, Miles ARNOLD; 4 great grandchildren, and 1 step-great grandchild; 2 brothers, Gene (Phyllis) STORY of Cedar Rapids and Marvin (Jeannie) STORY of Stockport plus many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Zella (Sandy) HUMMELL.
Visitation will be Thursday, September 24 from 5-7 pm at the Raymond Funeral Home in Birmingham. Funeral Services will be held Friday, September 25 at 10:30 am at the Raymond Funeral Home in Birmingham with Pastor Herb Shafer officiating. Interment will follow with Military Honors at the Maple Hill Cemetery, Birmingham. Donations may be made to Camp Courageous or to the Donor's Choice.
