Paul Leonard "Jake" Woodsmall, 82, of Mount Pleasant, died at 1:20 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, at Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at New Sweden United Methodist Church in rural Lockridge, with the Rev. Kenneth Smith officiating. Burial will be in New Sweden Methodist Cemetery in rural Lockridge.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday at Weir & Kimzey Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, with family present from 7-9 p.m.

Mr. Woodsmall was born March 21, 1922, in rural Mount Pleasant, the son of Wesley William and Elsie Marie Brownell Woodsmall. He married Alberta Winifred Hill in 1944 in Mount Pleasant.

After working at Hoffman Dairy, he was self-employed in construction before employment with Nelson Construction in Burlington. His 28 years with H. Eugene Smith Construction Company of Mount Pleasant principally as a cement finisher involved the construction of additions to Henry County Health Center, Iowa Wesleyan College and Mental Health Institute of Mount Pleasant.

He enjoyed animals, including horses. His special interest was raising rabbits, in addition to pigeons and chickens. He was a baseball and Mount Pleasant football supporter.

He was dubbed the unofficial, honorary mayor of the Leetown neighborhood of Mount Pleasant.

Survivors include his wife; seven sons, Larry "Woody" Woodsmall and wife Jane Lampe of Mount Pleasant, Paul Woodsmall of Mount Pleasant, Jerry Woodsmall and wife Carla of Lockridge, Ronald Woodsmall and wife Barb of Rockford, Ill., Tim Woodsmall of Mount Carmel, Ill., Tom Woodsmall of Mount Pleasant and Kevin Woodsmall and wife Teresa of Mount Pleasant; one daughter, Anna Marie Baxter of Mount Pleasant; one brother, Dwight Bud Woodsmall of Mount Pleasant; 25 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Terry D. Woodsmall; one granddaughter; four brothers, William and Denzell Woodsmall and two who died in infancy; one sister, Berdetta Dickey; two half-brothers, Everett and Dale Woodsmall; and one half-sister, Anna McGuire.
