Isabelle Mary SALTERBERG

Isabelle Mary SALTERBERG, age 91 of Iowa City -- formerly of Packwood and Orange City -- died on Saturday, July 18, 2015 at the University of Iowa Hospital.

Friends and family are invited to a Celebration of Life service on Saturday, August 29 at 10:30 am at the Lake Darling Lodge at Lake Darling State Park in rural Brighton. A reception will follow.

Isabelle Mary AUWAERTER was born on August 31, 1923 in Keokuk, Iowa, the daughter of William H. and Ethel (BECKER) AUWAERTER. She and her brother Bill were raised in rural Montrose. She graduated from Montrose High in 1941, where she played basketball and won several spelling bees.

During World War II, Isabelle worked at the Iowa Ordnance Plant in Burlington. She attended Iowa State University and graduated in '47 with a bachelor of science in child development.

She served as an ISU home economist in Humboldt, Marion and Jefferson counties, and later as a 4-H aide in Jefferson County.

Isabelle married Earl John SALTERBERG on July 31, 1953 and they made their home on a farm in rural Packwood.

Isabelle was active with the Packwood United Methodist and Christian churches and the Alton Presbyterian Church near Orange City. She served on mission trips to Alaska, Kentucky, Belize, Haiti and Honduras. She possessed an affinity for bicycling, watermelon and loosely competitive games of Scrabble. Isabelle might also be characterized by her penchant for recycling, septuagenarian RAGBRAI stints and being unabashedly frugal. She was unwavering in her beliefs, proud of her heritage and had a conviction for helping others.

She lived her final year at Bickford Senior Living in Iowa City.

In addition to her parents, Isabelle was preceded in death by her husband Earl (January 1971) and her brother Bill (August 1994) and other loved ones.

Still living are Isabelle and Earl's daughters and son: Janine CALSBEEK and her husband Doug of Orange City and children John and Ann; Sheryl GRIESE and her husband Ron of Johnstown, CO, and children Megan (Ron) THOMAS and Austin REECE; Bill SALTERBERG and his friend Leslie Snyder of Stevensville, MT; Linda SLOMA and her husband Rich of Des Moines, and children Joe, Jenny and Rob; and Susan SALTERBERG of Iowa City. She is also survived by her step-children Juanita BRAY of Prior Lake, MN; Millie (Wally) BRENNEMAN of Kalona; Roger (Linda) SALTERBERG of Tucson, AZ, and her step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren, her nieces and nephews Gary AUWAERTER, Connie KLUG, Jan HAMILTON and Dale AUWAERTER, and many other friends and family. Many thanks to her special friend and caretaker Maria Urice.
