Keith A. SMITH

Keith A. SMITH, 91, of rural Douds, died at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, 2015, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

The funeral wil be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Christ United Methodist Church in Douds, with the Rev. Mary Young officiating. Burial, with military honors by John Hyson Reneker Post, will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery (note: in Van Buren Co., IA).

Visitation will open at 2 p.m. Thusday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds, with family present 5-7 p.m.

Memorials to Christ United Methodist Church, John Hyson Reneker Legion Post or Zion Lutheran Cemetery can be left at the funeral home or church or mailed to the family at 15817 Highway 16, Douds 52551.

Mr. SMITH was born Aug. 19, 1923, in rural Douds, the son of Kermit A. and Ruth NEDROW SMITH. He married Marilyn Rose GIRE Dec. 26, 1948, at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Douds.

He graduated from Douds High School in 1943.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and traveled around the world and visited many foreign ports.

While in the Navy, he purchased the farm on Highway 16 east of Douds where he and Marilyn lived their married life. In addition to farming he was a self-employed road trucker hauling rock from Douds Stone and other quarries across southeast Iowa, worked at Golden Furrow Fertilizer Co. in Eldon and drove a Van Buren Community School District bus.

He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, John Hyson Reneker Post No. 494, American Legion and Douds Community Club and had served on Van Buren Community School Board.

Survivors include: his wife; one daughter, Anita Joy MILLER and husband David of Wyoming, Illinois; two sons, Kendall SMITH of Douds and Dennis SMITH and wife Cheryl of Bettendorf; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: one sister, Bernice WARNER; and one brother, Murl SMITH.
