Hedrick girl dies in car accident

RICHLAND - A 17-year-old girl has died following a vehicle collision in Keokuk County Saturday night.

Bethanne COOKSEY, of Hedrick, died in the accident while two other subjects, Dakota Bogert, 24, and Keegan Barker, 17, both of Bloomfield, suffered serious injuries and were taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics via Air Care.

The Iowa State Patrol reported that COOKSEY's vehicle, which Barker was riding in, was traveling north on 270th Avenue near the intersection with Highway 78 at 11:53 p.m. COOKSEY was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Equinox.

According to the Associated Press, Iowa State Patrol spokesman Sgt. Nathan Ludwig said COOKSEY ran a stop sign and collided with Bogert's westbound vehicle at the intersection of 270th Avenue and Highway 78. Bogert was driving a 2010 Jeep Patriot, with no passengers.

Both vehicles came to rest in a field on the northwest corner of the intersection.

According to the Iowa State Patrol's accident report, COOKSEY was wearing a seatbelt, but Bogert and Barker were not.

The incident is under investigation.

COOKSEY funeral 2 p.m. Friday at Pekin High School

PACKWOOD -- A funeral service for Bethanne COOKSEY, 17, of Hedrick, will be 2 p.m. Friday at Pekin High school, with the Rev. Tim Hadley officiating.

Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery in Ottumwa (note: in Wapello Co., IA). Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa with the family present from 4-7 p.m. Thursday.

Memorials may be made to Pekin community schools for a scholarship to be designated in COOKSEY's name.

COOKSEY died Sunday at the Keokuk County Health enter after being involved in a car accident Saturday night. She was a junior at Pekin High School, and the daughter of Terrie STULL of Hedrick and Jeremie COOKSEY of Eddyville. She had three brothers - Ethan COOKSEY, Braxton COOKSEY and Chandler STULL.

COOKSEY participated in volleyball, softball, speech, choir and was on the yearbook staff. She was working at North Hy-Vee in Ottumwa in the floral department at the time of her death.

Hadley, who is also dean of students at Pekin community schools, posted a message Monday about COOKSEY on the school's website:

"Pekin Community School and our community mourn the passing of one of our own, Bethanne COOKSEY, over the weekend. The school has secured the assistance of trained counselors and other helping professionals who are available to assist students Monday and throughout the rest of the week as needed. We will try to maintain a routine school day as much as possible, but will adjust as necessary to meet the needs of our students and staff. School counselors are available in all three buildings, with additional resources located at the high school ready to respond throughout the district."

At 11:53 p.m. Saturday, COOKSEY was traveling westbound on Highway 78 near Richland. A vehicle driven by Dakota Bogert, 24, of Bloomfield, and containing Keegan Barker, 17, of Bloomfield, was northbound on 270th Avenue. Bogert's vehicle ran the stop sigh and collided with COOKSEY's vehicle. Bogert and Barker suffered serious injuries and were taken by Air Care to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

The Iowa State Patrol initially misidentified the vehicles in its accident reort, claiming COOKSEY's vehicle was traveling northbound and Bogert's vehicle was traveling westbound, which is how The Ledger reported the accident in Monday's edition, but has since corrected that portion of the report.
