Irene C. Powers, 94, of Des Moines and formerly of Fairfield died Thursday, June 24, 2004, at Fleur Heights Care Center in Des Moines.

A funeral Mass was held June 28 at Christ the King Catholic Church in Des Moines. Burial was at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Dubuque.

Memorials may be directed to Christ the King Catholic Church.

Mrs. Powers was born in East Pleasant Plain, the daughter of Adam and Mary Pacha Peck. She married John James "Jay" Powers Nov. 16, 1940, in East Pleasant Plain. He preceded her in death.

Mrs. Powers lived in Fairfield before moving to Des Moines in 1954.

She was a teacher in the early 1920s before she began a career as a hairstylist. She owned and operated Irene's Studio of Beauty in Des Moines. She also had been a teacher and stylist for Jeri Redkin in the United States and abroad. She served on the Iowa State Board of Cosmetology.

She was a bridge player and a fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Iowa Barnstormers and Iowa Cubs. She was devoted to the prayer chain of Christ the King Catholic Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Mary Michael Murphy of Phoenix, Ariz.; and one granddaughter.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and six brothers.
