Note: I have been asked by the family not to republish Betty's obituary on the board here, but since Betty has contributed so many obituaries to this board not only for Jefferson County but surrounding counties, I feel it would be a dishonor to omit her passing.

Betty's obituary appeared in "The Fairfield Ledger" on January 2, 2015, on Page 6, and noted that she died December 31, 2014, in Columbia, MO. She is to be buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield, IA.

Also noted are the facts that she was born in 1934 in Abingdon, Jefferson County, IA, and was the daughter of Harry and Vera RILEY SMITH. She was married three times according to one of our county research volunteers, first to George Lewis WHITE, second to Donald MECK, and Kenneth HOOTMAN was her third husband. Kenneth passed away in 1994 and is also buried in Evergreen Cemetery. Betty had lived in Jefferson County, IA, as well as in California and Missouri. She was an avid genealogist and over the years has contributed many obituary transcriptions to this board as well as to other counties' obituary boards, and for this I am grateful because it's helped fill in a lot of info in our online records.

Betty is survived by a son, Dana WHITE, two daughters, Sherri MECK and Kayla MECK-WOODS, 15 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, one brother, Gary SMITH, one sister, Rhonda JUHLIN, and four stepchildren, Steven HERZBERG, Mary HERZBERG, Linda DAVIS and Roseanne HOOTMAN.

Her husband Kenneth preceded her, as did her parents, two brothers, Willard and Duane, and a stepdaughter, Teresa ROSENE.

Betty was a member of the Iowa Genealogical Society, and memorials may be made to the Fairfield Public Library's genealogy section, where Betty has placed copies of her family research. Contributions may also be made to Fairfield United Methodist Church or Barnes Children's Hospital in St. Louis, MO.

Thank you, Betty, for all you've done for Jefferson County and for IAGenWeb!
